Webstock 8x5 - the preso and notes

So you know why during my talk, Enterprise 2.0 - Why it scares the pants off IT Departments, I took my clothes off
Notes
Slide 2
Hi, I’m Mike Riversdale, also known as Miramar Mike and here I stand in a suit … at Webstock
Ever been to a party only to realise that you’re the only one that thought it was fancy dress, welcome to how I feel right now.
I help organisations open up to the Enterprise 2.0 world of wonders and use them to meet their vision and goals.
Guiding them from “stuck” to “unstuck”!
Slide 3
And this is my definition of Enterprise 2.0.
For me the key part and the scary part is the word “mindset”.
The technology is the “easier” part for IT Department but the people side – oooooh, scary.
Before I start can I get a show of hands of those that work in IT in any way and go to work like this?
To be fair it’s only the Project Managers, Business Analysts and other “managers” that wear a jacket
[TAKE OFF JACKET]
Now, who goes to work looking something like this?
[TAKE OFF TIE]
Now?
I have 4 minutes left to give you a taste of the fear ‘traditional” IT Departments taste when they hear Anything 2.0
Use just a slide show won’t give you the fight or flight experience that IT Departments experience
I want us to experience it (particularly me) and so I’m going to transform from “traditional IT” to “Enterprise 2.0” so that you can see/feel the difference.
Oh, and the phrase that absolutely fits is, “I’d rather be a flamboyant failure than a mediocre success”.
During the move from one world view to another I’m going to give you 3, out of many, specific IT Department fears.
See if they tally with where you work or clients you have met ….
Slide 4
[TAKE OFF SHIRT]
As Kelly highlighted yesterday, IT Departments have spent years and lots of the businesses money getting lots of these
Equipment and People with the skills to run this equipment
And Enterprise 2.0 wants to change that with “the cloud”, Agile Development and, shudder, open source - stuff we just don’t do.
[TAKE OFF SHOES]
Oh – and IT Departments hear that Enterprise 2.0 is all about “doing Web2.0 within the organisation” but hey, we know where this is all heading!
[TAKE OFF TROUSERS
Slide 5
Danger! Security breach!! Control lost!
[PUT ON SHORTS]
Danger averted and control regained.
Who will control all this?
Who will monitor who’s doing what with our content?
Who will say what users can and cannot do?
Where’s the management’s ability to oversee all this?
And the web, really, that’s not secure is it?
To be fair, valid fears – ones that need attention and to be addressed.
It’s not a reason to have a knee jerk reaction of, “No!” – but no might (MIGHT) be valid.
Slide 6
[PUT ON T-SHIRT]
Ok, let’s get down to it – the Web, really, it’s just a hobby.
It’s good enough to share your holiday snaps
It’s good enough to Twitter your web friends that you’re at a conference watching a guy take his clothes off.
BUT it’s not good enough to run our organisation. The apps just haven’t got the “weight”
My view - “weight” = “brain power needed to use”
SAP is “weighty”, it feels heavy, suffocating, all encompassing because it’s so damn hard to use.
Flickr feels “light” because” it “just works”.
As Nat described it in the opening talk, “You can feel the humanity front-and-centre”, with SAP you feel the cold touch of a machine.
With Enterprise 2.0 there’s no manual, there’s no 2 day training course (3 days extra if you want advanced) and there’s no certification.
There is guidance, set-up and patterns that fit the organisation to create – mostly “why” but very little “how”
And they are right … and I’m glad about that.
And so are the users that, as Kelly again pointed out, are already using this stuff at the organisations coal face – arrgh, back to “lack of control”
Slide 7
[PUT ON JANDALS]
Yeah, ok … but it’s still not real is it?
They (that’s you Web people) don’t take it IT seriously – they have Barcamps, Kiwi Foos, SuperHappyDevHouse and Webstocks
We want, summits, conferences and symposiums thank you!
Slide 8
The fears are valid and real to those experiencing them.
The worlds are perceived as being different, very VERY different, as I hope is now plainly obvious.
But being different is not one side – you have to be different to something.
Standing here I now feel “part of the gang”
However I would probably feel like that fancy dress party goer that got it wrong if I went to the CIO Conference dressed like this.
[PUT ON JACKET]
I live in both worlds.
I speak in many jargons.
But mostly I am passionate about making it happen for users whatever the technology.
If you think I can help you and your business come up and talk to me.
So you know why during my talk, Enterprise 2.0 - Why it scares the pants off IT Departments, I took my clothes off
