Aroha Wellington event on Stuff and in The Post

Two tickets needed for event to send aroha, thanks to Julian and everyone at Stuff / The Post that helped make it happen, most appreciated.
Wellington-based business coach Mike Riversdale wants to bring some light to those who may be struggling with a special event - Aroha Wellington.

The November 28 event at the Welsh Dragon Bar in central Wellington will feature comedy, live music, a podcast recording, prizes and even professional networking opportunities, with representatives from recruitment agencies and industry associations attending.

To attend you need to buy two tickets, one for yourself and one for someone who may be struggling.

“Struggling” has a broad definition in his books. It could be a colleague who was recently made redundant, a hospitality worker hunting for a job or just someone “you know needs a night out”.

Comedians Ryan McGhee and Patch Lambert will be taking the two comedy slots.

Former investment executives Kristen Lunman and Natalie Ferguson of Powrsuit, a global membership network for women, will lead a live podcast recording to share learnings, discuss about fears and resilience during a time of change.

The night will wrap up with music from Jake Clarke, a photo booth and even prizes for making connections.

Riversdale, who has a background in technology, government and project management, said Wellington and Wellingtonians were “going through some difficult times” – something he could relate to. The idea for the event came when he was talking with a friend.

“I thought I could sit there and whinge and whine about it or actually I could do something,” he said. Buying two tickets and giving one to someone struggling was a way to “show some aroha and support”.

Riversdale said being able to connect with new and relevant people could spur new approaches towards job hunting and get out of any downward spirals. It might not be an instant solution, he said, but it would be the first step to help resolve any situation.

“I know life is tough, but here's a little bit of a break,” he said.
